State of the Union - June 2016 - Featuring Hada Pixie

So the last time I did one of these posts it was back in September of last year. Upon reviewing it I realized that a lot has changed since then. Figured it was about time to go back and catch everyone up on the last few months and give a temperature check on where things are at.

Also, it gives me a good opportunity to share a few photos that I have been sitting on for a couple of weeks now. But first, the update.

Back in January, I moved out of my old apartment, leaving it and my studio space behind. It's been a bit of a challenge trying to find places to work. But due to some help and inspiration from a few different books, I am making things happen. Earlier in the year, I also linked up with a new business partner, who is slowly but surely working her way into the UNEX ecosystem. Soon I hope she will completely take over my booking process and begin writing and contributing her own work here to the Blog. We are making great process to moving onto bigger and better things.

2016 so far has been a busy one. I'm not shooting as much as I was last year with the 52 rolls project, but what I am doing has kept me very busy. Between the day job and my efforts here I am averaging 60+ hour weeks, and as of the time of writing this update I am going on day 50-something with only having had 3.5 "days off" in that time. But don't take this as complaining. I'm very excited for what is to come.

So what have I been working on lately? I tend to have a pretty good track record with keeping everyone in the loop as shoots happen. My friends over at Finite Automata and Ecto Proxy have kept me busy covering concerts, and of course, some of my old favorite models have stepped up and provided me with enough work to keep more than busy. But now I'd like to announce a few shoots that have kinda flown under the radar:

Right now Hada Pixie and I have three photo sets currently active over on Zivity (shameless plug, I always have 30 day free trials available, so email me to get one for yourself) one of which, "Stay Golden" was rated as an Editor's Choice!

Of course, I'm not going to spoil any of our photos from the sets in the blog here (Ahem, did I mention I'm giving away free 30 day trials?), but I'm happy to share a few of my selects that didn't "make the cut".

You may remember the photo below if you follow me on social media.

This was an image that didn't make the cut for our set "In the Sink" and below is a photo from "Stay Golden" that I talked about above.

Look at that golden sunlight? Pretty awesome right? I am kinda happy to admit that this shot was taken at like 4:00 in the afternoon, with sunset nowhere in sight. I've been growing so much in between shoots. Fully committing to my 2016 goal of "Learn More".

Pixie and I still have a few shoots we are holding in reserve, but I am able to give another sneak peek. During the same shooting day, we decided to document some custom latex work from Queen's Arrow Latex. These photos haven't yet been released into the wild, and more shall be forthcoming. Also, keep your eyes open for some more collaboration with Queen's Arrow coming soon (maybe? probably? call me!)..

So that's it for now. As always thanks for checking in and keeping up on what I've been doing. If you want to book a shoot of your own make sure to drop me an email from my contact page and let's talk about making something happen!

Trying something new

Hello friends and followers,

If you check out the page regularly, you are probably already familiar with the News, Extra, and NSFW blogs. I've added a new one (kinda–still working the bugs out), Visual.

The Visual blog will be a link to the most recent 20 posts to the UNEX Instagram page. Of course if you follow on instagram already, you won't need to keep an eye out here. However for those of you who don't (but want a quick look through my eyes, or want to see pictures of Fluffy Cat) you can take a look here for a brief glimpse into my world.

I'll see if I like it long term. Its still a little wonky, and I much rather would prefer that it logged it more like a traditional blog on a day to day "post" basis. But beggars can't be choosers.

Oh hey, would you look at that!

Hello friends and followers,

Just a happy heads up that the two shoots from last week featuring Hada Pixie are both now available online to Zivity subscribers!

(Not only that but both were ranked "Noteworthy" by their staff...I'm above average YAY!)

Check out the NSFW blog for a sneak peek at some outtakes from the set, and an offer for a free trial on the site!

UNEX Blogs: A Primer (AKA Does Blake like torturing himself?)

This is going to be a bit of a long one, probably the longest non-educational photographer blog entry ever written, but just stick with it. It'll all make sense.

So some of you if you have checked out the Underexposed website may have noticed that I have three separate blogs that I am all maintaining at the same time. Honestly its a bit much all of the time. However there is a method to my madness, and I hope to shine some light on that in this blog post.

Firstly if you are new to the site (welcome BTW), or only follow me through Tumblr or Facebook lets start with the basics.

Before I started my website I was working specifically through Facebook and Tumblr. It got a little, lets say, "messy". My posting style was either feast, or famine. I would either have a LOT of news, or very little. So I decided to actually start three separate blogs so that fans and followers could pick and choose what types of content they received.

The news, or primary blog is the best way to keep up on what is happening with us here at Underexposed. This is where I usually post updates as to who I am working with, where my work will be shown, and general news type updates. This is usually where the majority of my new work will be posted as it becomes available. (Tumblr link for easy reading here).

The extra blog (Tumblr link) takes a little more explaining, although not too much. Anything not considered news is usually posted here. Humorous outtakes from various shoots, experiments with new processes and tools, as well as extra images from content appearing on the main page. Instead of flooding you, the reader, with all of the pictures from a shoot at once I usually post them in more manageable chunks on this blog.

This is where things get a little more interesting. I would assume that most of you know what the acronym NSFW stands for, but for those who don't it means Not Safe For Work. Basically this is where my more "adult" or "exotic" work will be posted. Work for organizations like Zivity, Suicide Girls, and Kink Patrol will be talked about here for the most part. Especially if it involves images of any kind. Luckily Tumblr doesn't so much mind if adult content is posted, however not all social networks are the same. Facebook and Twitter for example are not so keen on having that type of content shown.

This also allows me to post work that I am becoming more known for, while keeping it hidden from clients that may otherwise pass me by for having that kind of content on the site. Believe it or not, shooting adult content (although something that some people can get behind) isn't for everyone.

Naturally the NSFW blog (Tumblr link) (as well as an adult portfolio) are hidden from the main page so that they are not immediately visible to the casual passer by.

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everything that gets posted to any of these three blogs gets automatically filtered through to Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitter. So if you want to only follow one source for all of your Underexposed cravings I would recommend the latter two. Links and a brief description of anything that posts will be collected there. For now content on Facebook and Tumblr are mostly the same. But as time goes on I will try to use those in completely different ways.

So that my friends and followers is a basic primer on why there are so many different ways to view the content on this page. Also it may be why if you follow us on Facebook or Twitter may see multiple posts in a day, or that involve similar sets of content. I try not to spam everyone unless its for a good cause and usually then I will just run the same content on all three pages once or twice just to drive the point home.

In short: I communicate with you all through three very different blogs, as well as social networks. Each one is a little bit different, however I would encourage you to follow them all (ideally through the website proper at UNEXPhotography.com but I know we live in the age of convenience so do what works best for you). Like posts, Share with your friends, write some comments (and I'll make sure to write back). Overall I love interacting with all of you, and like to know what you all think. Why else would I ask so much.

Hope things make a little more sense now

Just a quick check in (a state of the UNDEREXPOSED union so to speak):

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to clear up any rumors that I am dead or that I am out of the photography game. I am alive and well.

If any of you know me personally you will already know that I recently re-located a little bit outside of Atlanta for financial, and personal reasons. This move will afford me the opportunity to save a little cash as well as hopefully have a space to clear my head and get some new work coming once my day job gets a little less crazy coming up no later than the end of the holiday season. I also have a little bit more room to work that doesn't double as a bedroom...so that's a plus as well.

My new office is mostly set up, and aside from a little unpacking left to do I am just about ready to get back in the swing of things.

Speaking of new work, I have an upcoming appointment to do some band pictures for a local up and coming group called Earthbound Spirits from Douglasville GA. I have been contracted to get some pictures of them for promotions, and for their new website launching soon.

I am also in talks with another model from Zivity (you may remember some of my work with the great Scarlett Quinn which seems to have exploded on Tumblr these last few weeks) to get some new work done by the end of the month as long as my schedule allows.

In terms of personal projects, both that I have been planning are sadly, currently on the back burner. However I am still planning on getting those done sooner than later. Its just a matter of getting a budget together and some studio time (and clearing out some of the cobwebs floating around in my head).

We are coming up on a year of having an official website, and I thank all of you that have taken the time to come check it out. And if you have come out for any of my showings in the last year I want to thank you double. I think its almost time for a bit of a re-design and once I can get something solid that I like I will be taking the time to update everything.

Which brings me to my next order of business. What would you like to see coming in the future? Are there any ideas that you would want to see? Any stories you feel that need to be told?

What would I like to do you ask? Well I would like to take a little time to do some traveling. Aside from moving to Atlanta three years ago, I haven't really had a chance to get out on my own and spend some time in new places on my own terms. I would like to propose my "headshot extravaganza" ideas you may have heard me talking about where I visit new places and get some work done at a good rate while I am there. But of course that will take a bit more planning than I have time for right now.

Thanks for sticking in there, I know many of you would rather see a bunch more photos instead of me rambling. But don't worry...they are coming...you have my word.

Thats enough from me for the moment, but before I sign off I will leave you with a picture of some of my new roommates of the fuzzy variety. They still don't know whether or not to consider me a friend, or a sofa. Only time will tell.
