The DIY Backdrop Test 1 – Stan – 2015

So I forgot how I met Stan. More than likely probably through another mutual friend. But I could have run into him on the street for all I remember. But we have kept in touch through social media since. During part of my 52 rolls project, while I was looking for people to shoot, Stan stepped up and said that he would be interested in getting some band photos taken.

If you remember from the post about Finite Automata on the Extra blog, I didn't really consider myself a "band photographer" so initially I kinda pushed things off a little more than I normally would. But after the success I found with those, I figured I'd move forward with more.

I put out a call on my social media pages for someone to test an idea I had (found honestly) for a DIY backdrop. Stan was one of the few people that stepped up to the challenge and we decided to snap a few shots.

I still have a few tweaks I'd like to do to the lighting, but overall I was very happy with the results. Let me know what you all think!

Blix (In Color) – 2015

As promised, here are the color shots of the lovely model Blix

I couldn't decide whether or not I liked them better in color, or black and white. Luckily we live in a world that you can see both! We don't get to work together often, but hopefully it'll be sooner than a few years until we can meet up and work again.

Blix (In Black and White) – 2015

You wouldn't know it by looking at her, but Blix and I have worked together before at an event here in Atlanta a few years ago. However back then she looked completely different (not that that's a bad thing!). When I heard she was coming into town for a few days, I wanted to make sure that we had time to shoot together...even if it meant that I would be tired the next day.

We originally planned to meet around 8:00, but got pushed back to almost midnight. I wish we had time to shoot more, but luckily we found a somewhat quiet spot by an elevator and were able to snap off a few quick shots.

I couldn't decide which versions I liked better, these or the color versions, so I decided to post both. Check out the Extra blog in a few days to see these in a completely different way.

It was great catching up, and having a good laugh about a mutual "friend" of ours. I hope to do it again real soon.

Week 26 – I Hope These Turn Out – Fuji Superia X-Tra 400 (+1 Stop) (Exhausted C41 Chemicals?)

Pixie from last week also introduced me to Clockwork Calamity (Zivity profile, still just as NSFW as last week). And we had a great shoot (albeit very bright and sun-hurty) where she was cosplaying as Black Canary (Set totally should be live on Zivity if you wanted to throw me a few votes ;) ).

Seeing as how I have been having a hard time getting models to work with, I wanted to make sure I snatched up the opportunity to get some more people into the blog. The sad, and very unfortunate thing is I really should have taken my own thoughts to heart in "week 24" and bought new C41 chemicals. The negatives turned out SUPER thin (or at least look that way before scanning them). I'm not sure if I will get anything that remotely looks like the correct colors out of this roll.

As I'm prepping this blog post I am about to purchase more, so hopefully my Dragoncon photos (Spoiler Alert...they start NEXT WEEK!) will be processed much better. Also we are up to 41 rolls as of this update!

(Ninja Edit: Yep. It was totally the chemicals. The DragonCon Color photos turned out great!)

Ninja edit: Excuse my language, but HOLY SHIT. I bashed on Photoshop for the longest time and seriously saw it as a crutch and not a tool. But after seeing what I was able to recover from these images I am seriously impressed. I bet someone much more skilled than I could have even done a better job. I mean, look at what came out of my scanner from these:

I guarantee you they look worse in "person". I'm willing to accept the loss in sharpness that I had to take in order to get rid of the scanning artifacts in order to rescue even a few of these images. Especially considering I was trying for a result more like this (taken on my digital camera):

Finite Automata – EPK 2015.

I was approached by Dom and Scott from the Atlanta based band, Finite Automata to shoot some new photos for their new electronic press kit/tour photos.

I loved the concept they laid before me, and wanted to make sure I was able to capture everything the way they wanted. Before we even finished shooting, and looking only at photos from the back of the camera, I got the thumbs up (and a hug) from both of these guys.

If you are a fan of Dark Electro Industrial music, please make sure to check out their page and give it a listen.

It was seriously a hard choice on narrowing down which images to feature on this site, there were so many great ones to post. This was also my first chance trying out a new, smaller, camera rig than I previously have used. These were shot on a Sony a6000, and I am still trying to wrap my head around how a crop frame camera that small is able to crank out files so large. I'll be doing some more playing around with the Sony mirrorless line in the upcoming months.
