“What’s your availability?”

When Zak asks me this it usually means one of two things. Either he has an extra concert ticket for a show that I totally was meaning to get one for– But, usually didn’t for one reason or another. Or he has something that just NEEDS to be photographed sooner than later (See two posts ago on this very blog).

Challenge accepted.

While their true identities are known to a select few, I’m happy that “Alex” and “Siobahn” took time out of their schedule to drive half way across the city (and across oceans of time) to stop into the studio for some character portraits.

”Do I need to track down a kiddie pool to protect the studio floor?”

Oh hey, look who it is. Miss me? I’ve been spending the last few months dealing with some health issues and general weirdness. But sometimes you just have to get back on the horse and do the work.

I’ve been planning this shoot for a few years now (in a way anyway), and in a lot of ways this is actually a “Part II” from an earlier shoot I did for my “Cats who live with my friends” series (which I probably should get back to at some point).

When I was invited over the first time, things just didn’t line up the way we both wanted, so I was happy to finally get another chance.

This shoot was a bit shorter than what I’m used to doing, but after several months away I was happy to take things a little easier this time around. Nonetheless I think we were able to get some great stuff out of it.

Sunday O'Dare - 2023.

A couple of weeks ago I ran into Sunday at what probably could be considered her birthday party. We spent most of the night catching up about what all has happened in the last few years (it didn’t hurt that the both of us were more interested in being the quiet “adults” at said party than what else was going on) and decided it was about time for us to get back in the studio.

”I just ordered some new underwear”, she said, “…but it doesn’t come until March so we still have some time to plan”. I had some business trips planned this month, so it sounded good to me to get something on the calendar.

Looking back in the blog it was 2019 when we last worked together, and I don’t even think that shoot even got it’s own blog post. This both was far too long ago, and just wasn’t acceptable. So of course, we decided to change that in a big way.

I love the vibe that Sunday always brings to the table, and there is always something interesting to talk about from Disney-Singles Facebook groups, to the need for a little more Nine Inch Nails on the studio playlist.

Golden Mystique - 2023.

I like to keep things humble around here (even if this is my Blog and all) but this shoot was proof that when you know your craft, stay professional, and above all do good work– Good things happen.

Golden Mystique (AKA The Gilded Gams of Burlesque) found me in part through a list of Photographers put together by blog favorite, Titan Moon, and through the recommendation of someone who even though we have never worked together was impressed enough with what they had seen to send someone my way.

I’m happy that she could find me, and that we could get something scheduled (even if her weekend had been a wild one of little sleep and family responsibilities). Priding herself on being a queen of body positivity and a proud BIPOC performer, you shouldn’t miss out on seeing her perform if you have the chance.

I’m still figuring out what I’m doing with this black wall, but for the first thing I’ve done as part of studio V2 I’m certainly not mad at it.

Ruby Marx - 2023

Happy New Year everyone! Yes, I know, its almost the end of January already, but just bear with me here. I’ve been busy with work stuff and I’ve had to push back a couple of shoots because of travel and illnesses, but trust me there is already some exciting things in the pipeline.

This shoot mostly came about because I wanted to try out a new backdrop. This is my first experience shooting with a backdrop from Gravity Backdrops. As much as I like the images we took in color, the unique texture really came out when we went black and white.

What more can I say about Ruby that I haven’t said many times before? Every time we end up working together I know that we are going to create something special. Ruby is my go-to for the best “vintage Hollywood” looks and she does it so well. Something about the combination of style, technique, and color timing really made this shoot look like something out of an old magazine…and I’m not mad at that at all.
