Brandie - 2021.

The weather outside is starting to get cooler, and soon enough the leaves on the trees will all be on the ground instead. The spooky season will be here before we know it (even if we do have to go through second-summer first). It used to be that Halloween was my favorite time of the year, but these last few years have just been wearing on me and I just haven’t felt in the spirit.

I guess it’s time to change that.

Brandie replied to an Instagram post where I was looking for someone to work with, and even though we have worked together in the past, this was the first time one on one. I honestly didn’t know what to expect when she said “I’ll just bring a few different things”, but I certainly didn’t see myself getting the chance to shoot something with some witchy-feels this early.

I’m not complaining. I’ll just be over here humming “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” (because we all know that even though every day is Halloween, most of us weirdos only get 31 days to enjoy it.

Nathan and Sara (Bishop and Church) - 2020.

Nathan and Sara were some of the first friends I made after I moved to Atlanta in 2010. At the time Nathan was DJ-ing at a club where his wife Sara was bar-tending her way through her Doctorate. The first time Nathan and I actually “spoke” to each other was after a Friday night event on the same week I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed.

His Facebook message poked fun at the fact that I mostly sat by myself not paying attention to anyone in particular, and it wasn’t until I let him know of the recent dental surgery that we started the first part of our friendship. Flash forward sometime later and Sara invited me over to their home at the time, where Nathan and I got into (no shit) a 3 hour conversation about the “Terminator” franchise of movies. We’ve been close ever since.

I’ll get into it more when the time comes, but for now please enjoy the first steps into a long term project “Cats who live with my Frinds”

Let Me Take Your Picture - Episode 2
Nathan & Sara (Bishop & Church)

In this episode, Blake describes a new project that he is starting and sits down with some of the first friends he made after moving to Atlanta a decade ago to talk about one of the things he loves most in the world...cats.

At the end of the podcast I mention how much Church is just done with all of us and has retreated to the blanket fort, below are a few extra photos of that as it actually happened.

Gideon Hodge - 2020.

The Clown Prince of Cabaret, Gideon Hodge, has been terrorizing stages around the country for nearly 20 years. Known for his boisterous, zany characters and his dynamic movement and acrobatic style, Gideon brings his circus and theatrical background to the stage in his various personas and creative endeavors.

Gideon and I last worked together in June of last year when he commissioned me for some new headshots for what I thought would be a book jacket photo. I thought we got some very usable images, but unfortunately, they weren’t quite what was needed for the job.

I wanted the chance to make things right, and Gid wanted to capture something more closely resembling the work I’ve been doing in my home studio. So, of course, I invited him right over, and with the help of Courtney from Courtney Walters Makeup, it was off to the races.

Ruby Marx - 2020.

“Framed for a crime she didn’t commit, Ruby escaped prison to take to the road. Committing herself to a life of sin, attempting to be a Vegas showgirl, and taking up with Marxist ideals, Ruby found burlesque as her new trade of tricks. Having traveled far across the country, she now finds herself in the old South, embracing her sexuality and her education under her new, assumed name. Part kitty cat, part devil, she is a tease here to please”

Coming up on a year ago now, Ruby Marx invited me into her home with one thing in mind. Self Promotion. We had a wonderful time creating a few different looks in a small space.

While in NYC shooting with Nina La Voix a few weeks back, I was reminded how good it feels to strip things back and just shoot. So I was extremely happy when I booked two shoots on the same day.

Ruby and I set out with the same idea in mind (even if neither of us told the other what it was) to create something that invokes the feel of vintage Hollywood.

Be sure to follow Ruby and see where you can see her in person. You are sure in for a treat.
